September 21, 2013: Take Back Control, GTC

They day after an Oneida Eye editor appeared on local television to discuss the official departure of former-CEO Kevin Cornelius from Oneida Seven Generations Corporation, Oneida Eye was informed on Wednesday September 4, 2013 that there would be an OSGC Shareholder meeting that day.

Why wasn’t this information made available to General Tribal Council members?

An elder said that GTC members aren’t allowed to attend OSGC Shareholder meetings.

Think about that: Members of the supreme governing body of the Oneida Tribe are not only prohibited from reviewing OSGC’s Disclosure Reports (despite an existing published legal opinion that says GTC shall be able to view the reports), but GTC members are also barred from observing OSGC Shareholder meetings.

The Shareholder is the Tribe and the Tribe’s supreme governing body is the GTC, which is asked to make decisions regarding OSGC but is not allowed to view all necessary documentation nor to participate in – nor even attend – relevant meetings.

These matters can and should be addressed and settled at the September 21, 2013 GTC Budget Meeting: GTC members must be allowed to review Disclosure Reports and attend Shareholder meetings.

Community Discussions and Opportunities to View the Detailed Budget:

  • Thursday September 12, SEOTS in Milwaukee, 6:00-8:30 p.m. (It isn’t clear if MIS has repaired or replaced SEOTS’ Polycom video conferencing equipment which SEOTS Director Mark W. Powless said wasn’t functioning in an August 26, 2013 email, but if it is functioning there seems to be no reason why this meeting shouldn’t be simulcast in Oneida.)
  • Monday September 16, BC Conference Room, 5:30-8:00 p.m. (Why shouldn’t this meeting be broadcast to SEOTS?)
  • Thursday September 19, BC Conference Room, 6:00-8:30 p.m. (Supposedly this meeting will have video conferencing with SEOTS. We’ll see.)

It is time for GTC to take back control of its resources and its destiny from corrupt Oneida politicians & corporate executives.

Remember, Business Committee: GTC established you and has the right to dissolve you.

Now that it’s no longer difficult to assemble a GTC quorum, perhaps the BC has outlived its usefulness.
